Yahoo! Buzz Experiment (Part 1 of 3)

With the recent opening of Yahoo! Buzz to allow URLs from any Website to be submitted, there has been a clamor to find out if Yahoo! Buzz can be a major traffic driver. Here at Blogging Fingers one of the most thorough experiments on the Internet regarding Yahoo! Buzz has been conducted.

yahoo_buzzThe post submitted from Blogging Fingers to Yahoo! Buzz was 7 Real Reasons Blogging Is Fantastic, which is the the most popular post on Blogging Fingers and also one of the most mainstream. You can view the submission on Yahoo! buzz here.

What Happened To The Submission

The status of the submission started off as “submitted”, then after 4 votes it was “made popular” and appeared on the front of the Top Buzz business page and moved out of the up and coming. The Top Buzz business page sent hardly any traffic. Then it appeared on page 7 of the Top Buzz section with 10 votes. It slipped down to page 8, then lots more votes came in and it moved up to page 7 with 31 votes.

8 hours after submission there are 48 votes and the story has moved up slightly to page 6 of the Top Buzz section, and it is still lingering 2 thirds of the way down page 1 of the Top Buzz business page. (note: This is if it is sorted by “12 hours” which is the default). Sorted by the “most votes” leaves the post at the bottom of page 2 of Top Buzz.

The story ends having been made hot 10 hours ago, on page 8 of the Top Buzz, with 51 votes (almost double the nearest competing story!). It ends 2nd bottom of the business page where the top story only had 20 votes and the 2nd from top only had 2!

All of the sites on the main page are big sites, one has as little as 3 votes and there is another with 255. Gradually the Blogging Fingers submissions votes crept up to 59 but the rankings did not increase and the next morning the submission was completely gone from the Top Buzz. It never reached page one, despite having a higher number of votes compared to many of the page 1 stories.

That seems a bit strange. Maybe it is not just the votes that count (obviously it isn’t). I’m looking forward to your conclusion in part 3.

That is really strange. I haven’t used Yahoo buzz yet, so I’m waiting to see the rest of your conclusions. Does page view affect the Yahoo ranking? I wonder.

Interesting, thats another possible buzz ranking factor - the click though rate for the story.

Must be one of the algorithms of Yahoo buzz. Maybe they see how quick your votes come. If you are going to experiment with Yahoo Buzz more, I would like to suggest you to get as many votes quick as possible. Just my opinion though. Good luck.

It could well help to have votes in quick succession, it will take more experiments to find out!
