Exoclick Vs AdSense: Experiment Completed

googleadsensevsexoclickWhen the phone verification for receiving my Google AdSense payment failed a month or so ago I decided to look else ware for a PPC monetisation method for Blogging Fingers. For the last 8 days I have been using Exoclick to as an experiment to find out if it can compete with Google AdSense.

My Bluehost stats recorded over 3,000 unique visitors for those 8 days and over 40,000 hits. Exoclick only recorded 1479 hits for Blogging Fingers and a total of 18 clicks on the ads.

This is a surprisingly low conversion rate of only 0.012% (using the Exoclick stats). I was surprised at this because a couple of readers asked me about Exoclick saying that they were very well blended in, with the “ads by Exoclick” so far away from the ads that there must be a high conversion rate.

My only explanations are that not all the clicks were tracked (as many hits were not), or as there was a lot of low quality Digg traffic’ few ads where actually clicked. This resulted in a grand total of $0.49 being earned, an average of $0.027 per click.

How does this compare with AdSense?

Although I have not yet used Google AdSense on this blog I can compare it to an old blog of mine that is still making AdSense earnings. The traffic this old blog is severely slumped, down to just 103 unique visitors for the 8 days. Despite this $4.55 has been earned from a lower number of clicks (Google’s TOS forbids me to reveal the exact number of clicks).

I would make a summary table of all the stats but Google’s tough TOS forbids revealing a lot of the exact details.

Sources of Bias

  • The 2 blogs used in the experiment are different.
  • Different readers for each blog.
  • Different ad positioning, although on both blogs the ads are prominently positioned.

  • Extra Factors Favouring Exoclick

  • Exoclick have great customer service. Google took over 2 weeks to reply to my email and to fix my account, whereas Exoclick replied within 24 hours.
  • Exoclick are a very young company and have great growth potential.
  • Exoclick are dirt cheap for Advertisers.

  • Conclusion

Despite there being some bias in the experiment and other factors favouring Exoclick, ultimately it’s all about how much money can be made. At the moment the answer for publishers is AdSense. Exoclick have a friendly team and are a viable substitute to AdSense, but at the moment that is all they are. Google also has more options for changing the colour and font of the ads, which aids the CTR.

Sometimes no matter how hard you look for another source of income besides Google, Google still is the better choice. Good experiment though, it is alwasy good to be looking for multiple sources of income.

I’ve tried ExoClick and they just don’t pay enough! $0.01 per click is just not worth it no matter how big or small your blog is
