7 Top Ways to Make Online Contacts

blogging-contacts1. Commenting on blogs. This is probably the most obvious and easy thing to do although it is time consuming. Commenting on popular blogs brings more traffic, but the blog author will pay less attention to you. Commenting on a smaller blog, it is the authors attention you are capturing rather than that of his/her readers.

2. Joining BlogLight.ning. This is the new social network made especially for bloggers. There are forums and each member can start their own blog there and add friends and comments.

3. Instant Messaging. This a personal favourite of mine because it’s so personal. Sure, it’s time consuming but well worth the effort and can be fun too. Feel free to add me on Yahoo IM as “matt608freemoney”.

4. E-mailing bloggers. To some of you this may seem blatantly obvious, but the content of an e-mail should be different to that of a blog comment. The e-mail could be tipping-off the blogger about something or inviting them to give their opinion, whereas a blog comment should be focused to the topic of that individual post.

5. Write about then on your blog and be sure to link to them. Don’t expect much from linking to an A-Lister, although it does still tell them you exist. Linking to a smaller blogger is a great way to get their attention and potentially gain 1 more loyal reader who owns a blog in your niche, which is exactly what we all want.

6. Use the Mylot forums. There are few ‘top bloggers’ on Mylot. Nevertheless, many of us bloggers started there including me and there are lots of newbies looking to be sucked up as new readers and disciples. I think of Mylot as the swamp where bloggers are born out of blogswawn. You have the added bonus of being paid a few cents for each post you make here.

7. Digital point forums. I could have grouped this together with Mylot as forums but they are totally different. Digital point is a very high quality forum with a wide range of people of various web disciplines. Some are ‘in the know’ and others are not. It’s a great place for bloggers and webmasters alike to find business partners, get questions answers and make great deals.

Thanks for the useful list - just added to Digg.

I really like those shiny social bookmarking buttons you’ve got there. Are they from a plug-in?

Hey Skellie thanks for the Digg ;)

The social bookmarks are from Nirmal here: Create Social Bookmarks for your Blog, I’m glad you like them.

Thanks George! I agree, just like moving up in any other profession it’s about who you know.

Awesome idea Matt… never ceases to amaze me. If I had the level of maturity and intelligence at 18 years old that you have… who knows where I would be at in life today. You have a long, very successful and bright future ahead of you. I don’t get the opportunity to make my rounds here enough, as I stay so darn busy… but I just want to say that I think you are doing very well and its a pleasure associating with you.

Best Regards,
Garry Conn

Hi Matt,

thank you for the list of social networking sites. I would personally add one more, because I’m blogging for a very restricted niche (light aircraft pilots). As I’ve got now a reasonible volume of posts and resources on several sites, I contacted some non-virtual publishers (you know, these guys publishing magazines on paper).

Some accepted to profit from my blogs as kind of a “reader feedback”, so this made some people of my very niche visiting.

Thanks for a helpful article. I just started my own blog and have been working through Problogger’s 31 Days links. I find that a lot of the information becomes a bit repetitive, but you provided some links to sites I’d never heard of before. Much appreciated!
