A Problem With “Being Yourself” When Blogging

I read everywhere that your readership can see through lies and so its best just to be plain and honest when blogging. However this brings up a riddle-like issue as we are also advised to plan out what we are writing.

When blogging you have the opportunity to rewrite things and edit posts before publishing them. This is not the same as in real life when although you can and should think before you speak but you cannot delete what you just said if you thought it was stupid.

In yesterday’s post the ‘no.1 bad thing’ was to allow your mood to govern the tone of the post. However, it could be argued that this isn’t really ‘being yourself’ and you are only showing a part of yourself.

In addition, in the past, many bloggers, including me would write, “YOU are what makes your blog unique and that is why it’s good to show your personality in your writing.”

This supports blogging in every mood, rather than the being stable option.

In such a cluttered blogosphere, maybe it’s better to blog whatever your mood is, in order to make your posts for varied from each other and from other blogs.

It’s the difference between inconsistency and variety

Would you agree?

If you have a cell phone niche blog, I’m going might find less value if you start injecting your mood into your reviews.

On the other hand, if you run a personal blog, I’m going to find less value if you DON’T inject your mood into your posts.

It depends on what the readers have come to expect from you.

I agree with Jon. I think it depends on what type of blog you have. A business or product related blog would not be a place to be moody or angry because of personal issues. A truly personal blog might be ok for letting loose, but even a blog like mine, shouldn’t have totally over the top angry posts because of personal issues.

Nice answers guys. What about the meta-blogging niche?

As for a product related blog, don’t you think they can get extremely ’samey’ if no one adds some personality to their writing? Endless product listings can get very repetititve.

I mostly agree..

With consistency your readers know what to expect (in a way).

But with variety you have the potential to appeal to a broader audience..who may not like every post if it carried the same tone as the others.

Being yourself in your posts and having the “edit” option kind of reminds me of news reporters. They’re looking in a teleprompter reading a pre-written script..but they are delivering it in their own personality.

IMO they tend to change their tone slightly to fit the story. Never see em get mad or anything though.

Just for laughs..and an example of someone “being them self” watch this video on youtube. Its funny as hell…and he happens to be my Weather Man (at my FL address)
