Bizarre Results Of Posting Twice Per Day
By admin on Oct 3, 2007 in Blogging Ideas
You may remember that 8 days ago I proclaimed I would be upping the tempo and posting twice per day instead of once. The traffic results have been somewhat baffling and very inconsistent.

The first point on the graph is the 24th, which was the last day when I posted only once. You can see the traffic was much the same as it is now. As soon as I started posting twice there were 3 high traffic days and you can imagine I thought this was due to me posting twice per day. However, after that everything slowed back down. So What happened?
StumbleUpon Has The Answer… Or Not
Posting twice per day allowed for more posts to have the chance of getting lots of stumbles. 1 post each day on the first three days of posting twice did this. The spike was for 3 different posts and all of it came from StumbleUpon.
Despite my post called Lessons Learned From A Google-Slapped Niche Blog hitting Sphinn page1 and receiving more stumbles than Marketing Choices To Be Made When Reacting To The Latest Blogging Craze StumbleUpon failed to send any noticeable amount of traffic to either post. Between the 2 posts there where over 20 positive Stumbles and a few reviews but 0 traffic was sent. The only thing different about those stumbles is most of them came from me using the send-to feature. I submitted one of them, which could have caused less traffic to arrive but as for the other article I am in the dark. I hate to jump to some algorithmic conclusion but the only difference to usual was the use of the send-to feature.
Does anyone have an explanation for these bizarre StumbleUpon goings on?
Other Issues With Posting Twice Per Day
Initially I thought it would simply mean 1 more post is needed each day, but is not as simple as that. The 2nd post I publish gets more attention because it stays up overnight, which is when the Americans come out to play. This makes for some tough decisions when planning out the order to post things; especially when the promise to advertisers is their post gets to stay at the top of the page for 15 hours.
In addition the opportunity for publishing more experimental posts a is very strong temptation and only adds to the fray of traffic spikes..
Conclusion
It is still very early days for monitoring this. I’ll post another update about how posting twice per day influences traffic in the future.

Your RSS subcriptions also seem to be jumping around more than a frenchman’s dinner…any idea why this is?
RSS numbers normally fluctuate a bit, but they are up and down a lot. Hard to say why at this stage…
interesting results… i have never tired twice a day and personally i don’t have the time… But if it works stick too it..
I post once in every two days, and that’s the best for my blog. I have tried posting twice a day, but it hardly got any views (excluding the feed views).
Matt,
I also had a similar result with SU this week. I normally don’t review or give a thumbs up to my own posts, but I did for one this week because I thought it would generate some interest from Stumblers. It’s gotten several positive reviews and a handful of thumbs up, but 0 visitors from SU. I’m not sure if it’s because I submitted it, but I’m not going to do that again soon.
In my niche we have two major tradeshows a year. I am currently in post-tradeshow hangover. My traffic triples during a tradeshow, and then I have to get used to the plunge afterwards. Fortunately, it never sinks as low as it was prior, so they always mean some kind of traffic increase for my site.
