Reader Feedback Needed: Managing The Top Posts List

As you can see the list of Top Posts on Blogging Fingers just keeps on growing as I add what I consider pillar content to it. However, it is becoming too long and rather intimidating to a casual visitor who can’t decide which link to read or click.

I am doomed to be biased about which of the Top Posts should be removed because I’ll end up removing which ever took the least effort rather than the one of the lowest quality because I judge them all fairly equally quality wise.

To voice your opinions just leave a comment with the title of the post you think should be removed from the Top Posts list. Be sure to actually have a flick through the Top Posts to make sure you are making a fair decision!

I will take everyone’s highly valued opinions into account and whittle away at the list accordingly.

You got that right… An ever-growing list of top posts not only gets too long to scan, but, unless you change its order, it always looks the same.

How about this: (1) decide on how many to list on the current page (e.g. five) and link to (2) a new page where you put the others (3) do a FIFO every time you add a new one.

It might also be an idea to periodically poll your readers to see what THEY think is you pillar content. You might be surprised…

That’s an interesting idea John, I’m sure a ‘best of Blogging Fingers’ page would go down well.

Polling visitors is also a real possibility, although I wouldn’t want to do it too often or after a while people would just lose interest and stop voting.

Keep the thoughts coming guys!

Why not use the popularity plugin from Alex King and display the top 10 posts that have been enjoying the highest popularity. Easy to set-up, and offers flexibility. You should give it a try.

Matt, I don’t think you do have too many posts in the Top Posts section. Sure, if it were a couple longer you would have a problem but at the moment it’s fine.

Personally I don’t think your “what is RSS” post is really worthy of being called pillar content, but then again it probably helps you increase RSS subscriber numbers so it’s a tough choice.

You think just 5 posts should be there? Even so it’s good to know which you think are the 5 best Alistair ;)

Just don’t dare think about pruning them off sir, they have titular titles that suck the reider in and they’re well written. To be honest I can see your dilema, all posts up there deserve to be. I havn’t been much help at all have I, but least you got a few comments out of me ;)
