Statsisfaction: Wear Protection At Stats Checking Orgies
By Matt Jones on Sep 10, 2007 in Blogging Tips
Warning: Prepare yourself for loops oops of logic, analogies and finding out what makes my bizarre mind tick. Read it at your own risk.

You can see that Blogging Fingers‘ traffic stats have consisted of several spikes followed by increased readership after those spikes, so why do I not put effort into being ‘Statsisfied’?
Don’t Take The Prize Before You Have Reached The Finish
I know how important motivation is. If I were satisfied with how things were going the goal of ultimate success would come later, if at all (a problem few diggers have on a Saturday night ;).
My parents used to say money does not bring happiness, and of course they would be right. However, perhaps part of the reason why the filthy rich are not happy is because they have an insatiable appetite for more. If you are simply ‘aiming for success’ and to be a tycoon you are doomed for a life of misery because there is no specific point that marks the finish line, you are simply trying to run as far as possible.
This is why it is such a good idea to write your goals down, rather than have them swirling around in your brain like a spiked cocktail.
Allowing your-self to be too easily pleased brings failure in the long term.
Being satisfied by increased stats (traffic, rankings, RSS readership etc) too easily is nothing to do with the power of positive thinking, which is a different tool entirely.
The Power Of Positive Thinking
Forgive me if you feel this is a ‘self-improvement’ post, but I have been experiencing these issues first hand and it is essential to tackle them to be a successful blogger.
Positive thinking is not tricking yourself into believing things are going well. My alter ego that secretly wears a monocle calls this ‘Common-Tom-Foolery’.
Example of Common-Tom-Foolery Logic
John Chow was rocketed to greatness after 5 digg page1’s in quick succession. He made over $17,000 last month. Therefore, if I can get on digg just once I will make $3,400 a month(1/5 of Johns’ earnings).
That is using limited information to form a false conclusion.
Example Of Positive Thinking
Blog stats have been increasing at a good rate overall despite a few dips in the number of conversions. I know deep inside me that I have the ability to learn how to increase conversions and I have already made it my goal to increase conversions by 50% by the end of the month.
You could say it is the difference between stubbornness and persistence. For positive thinking to make sense, there must be an aspect of your blog that has gone well.
Positive thinking multiplies success, but if you have had 0 success so far, 0 x 1,000,000 still makes 0.
Don’t enter stats checking orgies without protection. It is not the size of the stats that matter but how you use them in your mind to get closer to your goal with out deluding yourself.
