Are you an Obsessive Stats Checker?
By admin on Jul 4, 2007 in Creative Blogging
If the answer to that question is “yes” then you’ve come to the right place. Being a recovering ’statso-holic’ myself (mmm stats-ohol) the solution is much more simple than you might think.
Treat Stats Checking as a Reward
A major problem for many bloggers when starting off is too much commenting on other blogs and not enough content creation for their own blog. This tends to cause the frequent stats checking orgies to be a rather disappointing affair. After all, the blogger feels they have been doing a lot, commenting where each comment (if they are good comments) may get a drip or a trickle of traffic at best.
The answer is check stats only after completing a blog post in full. It sounds so simple but having that little bit of restraint has a great many benefits:

If that Doesn’t Work…
If that fails you are not really sticking to it, remember you have to have finished writing that blog post in full, not a rough draft. Don’t go thinking that its OK to have some stats-ohol after spending 20 minutes churning out a lump of text. For me the perfecting and tweaking of a post takes just as long and is definitely not ‘the easy bit’.
Conclusion
Don’t waste time checking stats, especially if you are just getting started blogging. Starting off is the hardest time in a blogs life and that extra bit of productivity could be all it takes to boost your blogs progress.
What I have outlined is a simple system of using addiction as a motivator rather than a hindrance. It flips the whole concept of addiction on it’s head and no-doubt some people will say this method fuels addiction. I say it can help you develop a more successful blog.
